Lawmakers Pay Tribute to Law Enforcement

January 16, 2026

State Rep. Jesse Vanderwende (R-Bridgeville, Greenwood) joined State Sen. Brian Pettyjohn (R-Georgetown) in sponsoring Senate Concurrent Resolution 125 this week, recognizing Law Enforcement Appreciation Day in Delaware.

Numerous law enforcement officers came to Legislative Hall to mark the occasion, including Colonel William D. Crotty, the Superintendent of the Delaware State Police, bottom photo, who addressed the House Chamber.

Rep. Vanderwende offered the following comments in introducing SCR 125 and calling for a vote:

It is my honor today to sponsor this Senate Concurrent Resolution recognizing ‘Law Enforcement Appreciation Day’ in the State of Delaware, and to formally acknowledge and commend the men and women of law enforcement who serve the communities across our state.

Their responsibilities demand the highest levels of professionalism, sound judgment, and an unwavering commitment to public safety, often in a charged environment where their actions are too frequently unfairly criticized or mischaracterized.

The work they perform is complex and demanding, and their dedication to service, accountability, and the rule of law remains essential to our state’s welfare.

These men and women place themselves at risk every day. As we were recently, tragically reminded by the death of Delaware State Police Cpl. Matthew ‘Ty’ Snook, in carrying out this public trust, some officers do not return home to their families.

I hope all members of this chamber will join me in expressing our sincere gratitude to our law enforcement officers for their service, their sacrifice, and their continued commitment to the people of Delaware.

The measure won unanimous approval in the House and Senate.
